Cancer is a complex experience, affecting not only the body but also the mind. Empathetic care reduces the uncertainty and stress felt by many patients, prompting them to be more receptive to treatment, accelerating progress, and achieving better outcomes.
In a field where compassion can be lifesaving, healthcare professionals often walk a fine line between caring for others and safeguarding their own well-being.
The International Psycho-Oncology Society (IPOS) and the European Cancer Organisation brought a special Young Cancer Professionals Roundtable on ‘Empathy in cancer treatment and compassion fatigue.’
Participants shared insights from their professional experience and shared strategies to navigate the challenges of empathetic care.
The online event took place on Wednesday 25 June, 16:00–17:30 CEST.

Every year around 300,000 EU citizens receive a diagnosis for a haematalogical malignancy, including leukaemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma. Each cancer type places its own unique demands on health systems and how they can best prevent, detect, diagnose, and treat these diseases.
To this end, the European Cancer Organisation is supporting the EU-funded research project SANGUINE to investigate novel approaches to early detection of these blood cancers. It is also bringing together its member societies, patient organisations and other entities to identify precisely what is needed for better blood cancer treatment.
Stakeholders from across Europe and beyond joined us as we explored the latest developments in these fields and their potential impact on enhancing blood cancer care.
Thank you to all who participated in this valuable event.

Background
Despite digital health's potential, challenges persist in cancer care, including a scarcity of workforce training on digital skills and limited digital health literacy.
Digital literacy among healthcare professionals, non-clinical professionals (i.e. health managers) and cancer patients is crucial for the successful digital solutions uptake and integration across the cancer continuum hence capitalizing on its full potential. Education and training in digital health are identified as top priorities for developing the future healthcare workforce (i.e. healthcare professionals and non-clinical professionals), improving the quality of care and quality of care experience and enabling patient access to improved healthcare services.
