ECO Response to the EU Global Health Strategy Consultation

28 November 2022

In September, the European Cancer Organisation (ECO) responded to the European Commission consultation to update the EU Global Health Strategy.

With the support of several of our Focused Topic Networks, including our Prevention, Early Detection and Screening Network and HPV Action Network, we have had opportunity to consider the proposals and provided the below key areas of feedback for consideration:

  1. Achieving Cervical Cancer Elimination globally, by demonstrating success from its own HPV cancer elimination campaign, as set out in Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan;
  2. Making EU funding mechanisms more useable in respect to global health priorities. Processes for accessing EU funding should be continually reviewed for useability, especially for resource-constrained NGO actors, who are typically the most nimble and adaptable for meeting urgent health needs, as demonstrated during the period of war in Ukraine;
  3. develop an international framework under the World Health Organisation with leadership, decision-making processes, binding decisions for its members and openness to the participation of non-state actors;

Our draft response is available here.
