The multi-stakeholder event will bring forward the latest evidence, perspectives and recommendations related to chosen themes including: 

  • Meeting the needs of cancer patients experiencing metastasis to the brain; 
  • communicating to patients and their families and caregivers about a metastatic diagnosis; and, 
  • how to better address the social and legal implications of metastatic cancer

15:10-15:55: Metastasis to the brain

The session will examine

  • The prevalence of metastasis to the brain, including from the most common cancer types
  • The unique patient experiences of brain metastasis, the double disease burden
  • The approaches that health systems might take to better respond to such unique needs

15:55-16:40: Communication to the patient about a metastatic diagnosis

The session will examine

  • The experiences of patients and their families/caregivers when receiving a diagnosis of metastatic cancer
  • The principles that should underpin any such communication
  • The tools that health systems, cancer centres and clinicians might refer to to improve communication to the patient about a metastatic diagnosis

16:40-17:25: Addressing the social and legal implications of metastatic cancer

The session will examine

  • The day-to-day barriers and challenges that a patient will experience as a result of living with metastatic cancer
  • The means to address these
  • A consideration of how national cancer control plans are, or are not, taking account of these policy needs

17:25-17:30: Event conclusions
