From the President - The Search for a New CEO

24 October 2024

It would be difficult to overstate Mike Morrissey's impact on the European Cancer Organisation (ECO). Let's face it: we were in dire straits when Mike first arrived five years ago as our chief executive officer.

Thanks to Mike, we not only survived, we thrived – and during a pandemic that disrupted virtually everything.

He reinvigorated ECO. He introduced our 10 Focused Topic Networks, Community 365, and our work in EU-funded projects.  He expanded ECO's influence both inside and outside of Brussels, including recent ECO visits to dozens of European countries – sharing what we've learnt and lending support to Europe's Beating Cancer Plan.

It was only natural, however, that after five years at ECO, Mike might want to move on to new challenges, and new opportunities, at a new institution. So, it was not a complete surprise when he informed me last month that he will take up a leadership role at Global Public Policy for Europe/Canada at MSD on 1 January.

ECO is now moving decisively to find Mike's replacement. We've hired a prominent executive search company, and we'll begin a series of interviews with leading candidates - both formally and informally - in the coming days and weeks.

We're following the same model we used in 2019.  Those involved in the interviews and initial selection process will include the ECO president, past president, president elect, treasurer and, different this time, we also have a PAC representative to reflect the patient perspective.

Our goal is to present three or four highly qualified candidates to the board by the end of the year. According to our statutes, the ECO Board has the final say.

Speaking for myself, I'm looking for a candidate who understands ECO's rapidly growing size and influence and who appreciates our vital mission in Europe. We need someone who can build on what we've achieved, and that includes our foundation, our international brand, and our celebrated standing. ECO today is very different from five years ago.

Change is not always easy, but it's one of life’s greatest catalysts for growth. In moments like these, it is essential to remember that with every transition comes the opportunity for new beginnings, new perspectives, and new achievements.

What makes ECO so remarkable is not solely dependent on any one individual. It’s reliant on you – all of you who bring your unique talents, passion, and dedication to the table. You are the heart and soul of this organisation, and that will never change.

With very best wishes,

Csaba
