ECO to meet new and re-elected members of the European Parliament in Strasbourg

26 June 2024

This July, ECO members and staff will travel to Strasbourg in France to join the first plenary session of the new legislature of the European Parliament. The visit will strengthen relationships with Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) and ensure the continuity of the 'Time to Accelerate' campaign following the European elections.

We will continue to urge the next European Parliament to fulfil the promise of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan and the EU Research Mission on Cancer, both of which are great successes for health policy. It is time to accelerate, together, against cancer. The bold vision of 27 countries all cooperating closely to combat cancer remains as valid now as it did in 2019 when European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen first set out that hopeful expression for how to do better together.

Following elections across the EU earlier this month, the new European Parliament (all 720 members) will meet for the first time in Strasbourg on 15-18 July for a plenary meeting. The meeting will be a critical occasion during which new committees, allegiances and priorities will be decided. Several MEPs have already expressed their support for our campaign and ECO has meetings lined up with new voices interested in promoting a healthcare agenda.

New MEPs, indeed all European leaders, must express their support to complete Europe’s Cancer Plan, refresh it to account for new developments in science and expand European goals on cancer control.
