Congratulations to the European Parliament. Strong Recommendations for Fighting Cancer Together!

17 February 2022

This week the European Parliament has been reviewing and voting on its position on a range of EU cancer policy matters.

All MEPs were invited to provide their opinion of the report of the European Parliament’s Special Committee on Beating Cancer (BECA) during plenary debate sessions.

A vote was taken yesterday evening in respect to its endorsement. The results were overwhelming approval with 652 MEPs voting in support and just 15 MEPs voting against.

Speaking today on the news of the Parliament’s endorsement of the report, Andreas Charalambous, President of the European Cancer Organisation (ECO), said:

“Members of the Special Committee on Beating Cancer worked tirelessly throughout the past year, listening to all stakeholders, and cooperating openly between party groupings to deliver the best consensus they could achieve. A shared vision for EU policy action in cancer. The report is extensive and conveys the views of Europe’s elected representatives when it comes to important topics such as cancer prevention, early detection, treatment, survivorship and follow up care.

The report provides an excellent foundation for the European Commission, EU Member States and the diverse range of policy implementation partners to work from. I want to extend my congratulations, on behalf of the European Cancer Organisation, to everyone involved in creating this landmark document. We will be doing everything in our power to keep its core recommendations front and centre of thinking during delivery of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan.”
