The European Cancer Organisation’s representatives recently met with the new EU Health Commissioner, Stella Kyriakides, and her team working on the Europe's Beating Cancer Plan.
Stella Kyriakides emphasised that the launch of the Europe's Beating Cancer Plan consultation process at the European Parliament on 4 February is planned to be an inclusive launch, with a full consultation with organisations like the European Cancer Organisation and citizens across Europe, with a view to having the plan ready by the final quarter of this year. Commissioner Kyriakides said the launch would demonstrate that the development of the Plan would not be a “top down” exercise and a journey where we would work together.
This consultation period will see Stella Kyriakides team working with the European Cancer Organisation's family and other organisations to collate the work that has already been completed, identify gaps and needs. This will help align stakeholders where there is currently a duplication of effort, which has already been identified as an unintended consequence of the large number of organisations involved. Stella Kyriakides said she wanted the new plan to be ambitious, realistic and measurable and the deliverables in the plan to focus on different times – short, medium and long term goals.
