Cancer care in Europe must meet its good news challenges - the good news that people are living longer; that scientific and medical advances are offering innovative treatment options not previously possible; and that professions across the cancer care continuum are developing increasing levels of specialisation. But this good news has implications for healthcare budgets. Continued improvement in cancer care may become stalled unless the health economics challenge of cancer care is met.

The European Cancer Organisation and the Collaboration for Oncology Data in Europe (CODE) are embarking on a joint initiative to explore outcomes measurement within cancer care. The goal is to further explore the topic of outcomes measurement to identify metrics of high clinical value, meaningful for both patients and clinicians, but which can be measured efficiently and be put “at the right scale”. This work will be part of the longer journey towards comprehensive outcomes measurement.

Among other key asks, the joint statement entitled “Europe, let’s do more for Health!” calls for strong leadership with targeted and effective EU action on health, a framework for tackling non-communicable diseases and for EU to drive patients’ empowerment.
