The European Cancer Organisation’s new Action Report It Can Be Done – Beating Inequalities in Cancer Care shines a much needed spotlight on inequity that exists in all parts of cancer care, in all countries in Europe. The report focuses especially on the East-West divide in cancer care, as well as the discrimination that can occur against older cancer patients.

This Tuesday, the ministers responsible for research in Germany, Portugal and Slovenia signed the declaration “Europe: together against cancer”. The ministers came together at the conference on research policy entitled “Europe: Unite Against Cancer”, held under the German Presidency of the Council of the European Union, to discuss joint approaches to strengthening cancer research in Europe.

The European Cancer Organisation’s major new report, Viral Protection: Achieving the Possible. A Four Step Plan for Eliminating HPV Cancers in Europe, calls for urgent action to eliminate most of the 87,000 cancer cases caused in men and women by HPV (human papillomavirus) each year across over 50 countries in the WHO European Region. Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan, due for later this year, provides a great opportunity for the EU to take the lead on this issue. The WHO European Region should also recommend action to all its member states, in addition to the recent WHO Global Strategy for elimination of cervical cancer.

Today, at the virtual European Health Forum Gastein event, three European level cancer policy stakeholder organisations gave a shared commitment to developing and promoting the concept of a European Cancer Dashboard to support the success of the forthcoming Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan.
The Dashboard is suggested as a vital monitoring and implementation tool to help underpin the Plan, and is strongly supported by the European Cancer Organisation, the European Cancer Patient Coalition (ECPC) and the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations Oncology Platform (EFPIA).

The new Report of the Mission Board for Cancer ‘Conquering Cancer: Mission Possible’ is the Mission Board’s proposal to the European Commission for a Mission on Cancer. This Mission outline will be used as a basis for further stakeholder and citizen engagement activities in the remainder of 2020 and define a broad strategy for the Horizon Europe Framework Programme.
