ECO Meets with Cancer Plan Champion Catherine Amalric MEP

15 February 2024

The European Cancer Organisation’s Policy Team has met with French MEP Catherine Amalric (Renew Europe). She assumed her role in September of last year following the sad passing of Veronique Trillet-Lenoir MEP, an oncologist and great supporter of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan. MEP Amalric, a hospital pharmacist by profession, is committed to continuing the work of her predecessor and defending the interests of patients on key initiatives, including the EU Pharmaceutical Package.

At our meeting, we discussed the priorities of the Time to Accelerate: Together Against Cancer Manifesto for 2024-2029. We talked at length about the upcoming European Parliament elections and the need to obtain political commitments from all candidates to ensure the European Health Union remains resilient and focused on protecting cancer patients and survivors. MEP Amalric expressed her commitment to supporting the further implementation of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan and to refresh it as needed in the coming years. She also highlighted the value of European centres of excellence to create ever stronger levels of quality cancer care.

MEP Amalric is the Renew Europe Shadow Rapporteur, assisting the Parliament’s scrutiny of the proposed EU Pharmaceutical Directive. This is set to be adopted in the Parliament’s Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety in March, prior to being put to a vote during the first plenary session in April. MEP Amalric discussed her key objectives in Parliament, including ways to prevent and manage medicine shortages more effectively.

Following the meeting, MEP Amalric was pleased to become the latest member of the National and European Parliamentarians for Cancer Action to endorse the 'Time to Accelerate: Together Against Cancer' manifesto.

She is not alone. Philippe Juvin, Member of the National Assembly in France and former MEP, joined her in endorsing the Time to Accelerate campaign. You can see a full list of the endorsements on the Manifesto page.
