iNTERVENE’s main objective is to support health literacy for cancer prevention and care, improve health literacy and reduce inequalities in cancer. Its goal, underpinned by the Health Literacy Pathway Model, is to create a methodology and educational content extending the health literacy of citizens, cancer patients, their carers’, and healthcare professionals on cancer prevention and care.

• From a patient’s and citizen’s perspective, this will be achieved by increasing their knowledge on the impact of prevention on various cancers’ development, promoting and cultivating their preparedness to engage in preventive behaviors and providing empirically validated and free of medical jargon information on the cancer care continuum.
• From a healthcare professional's perspective, this will be achieved by increasing their knowledge on health literacy, a better understanding of the impact of low literacy on patients and citizens, and increasing capacity on specific communication and interaction skills.

The objectives will be achieved through an innovative strategy that includes the development of a Health Literacy Hub including a Virtual library and a health literacy training programme for healthcare professionals, patients and citizens based on gamification and virtual patients for scenario-based training to ensure effectiveness, engagement and skill transferability. The programme will be developed through the establishment of a Living Lab approach with the participation of end-users, stakeholders and experts.

The accessibility and outreach of the project will be increased by also developing conventional health literacy awareness material aiming to reach targeted groups at risk, such as people with low digital literacy or displaced groups.

iNTERVENE, funded through the EU4HEALTH programme, recognises that digital literacy levels vary widely across different population groups. As a result, the project is developing tailored, accessible resources that meet diverse needs while supporting equitable participation in the digital transformation of healthcare.

Through its multidisciplinary framework, the project seeks to:

• Strengthen the understanding and practical use of digital health services and tools.
• Facilitate collaboration and knowledge exchange among patients, professionals, and policymakers.
• Promote transparency, trust, and inclusivity in the use of data and artificial intelligence in healthcare settings.
• Reduce disparities in access to digital health resources to ensure that innovation benefits all communities.

By equipping individuals with stronger digital skills, confidence, and awareness, iNTERVENE contributes to a broader vision for patient-centred, ethically grounded, and data-driven healthcare.

As artificial intelligence and digital platforms play an increasingly central role in care delivery, the project underscores the critical importance of ensuring that technology enhances – rather than replaces – the human connection at the heart of health and healing.
