Steve was elected Chair of the Health & Social Care Select Committee in November 2022, and succeeds Jeremy Hunt, now Chancellor of the Exchequer. Steve has been the Conservative Party MP for Winchester since 2010 and has a wealth of experience in the health policy space, previously serving as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the then Health and Social Care Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, before subsequently serving as a Minister in the Department of Health from 2017-2019 covering primary care and public health.
Upon being elected to the influential select committee, Steve said that the ability of the health and social care sectors to continue to deliver for patients is a key priority, and particularly how to deal with the backlog caused by the pandemic and the need to recruit a workforce now that’s capable of meeting future demand. Steve went on to say that despite spending vast sums on health, we have failed to reap the rewards in better outcomes, and that we need to understand why and to press the government about getting better value for our money.
Steve is interested in hearing the experiences and perspectives of those involved in health and social care policy, along with ideas for areas that his committee could pursue under his leadership.
