
Ilias Gountas is a Value and Patient Access Manager at MSD Greece and a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Medical School of the University of Cyprus. He holds a PhD from the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and has received advanced training in mathematical modelling and health economics at the Centre for Disease Analysis in Colorado, USA.
His research and professional work focus on the design and evaluation of health policies, health economics, patient access strategies, and the application of quantitative methods to support evidence-based decision-making in public health. He has been awarded fellowships from the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation, the State Scholarships Foundation of Greece, and the ONISILOS programme of the University of Cyprus.
His postdoctoral research in Cyprus has generated critical epidemiological and economic evidence to inform national strategies for the elimination of HCV infection and the implementation of PrEP as a key intervention for HIV prevention. In the field of HPV, he has contributed to significant epidemiological studies assessing the disease burden in Greece and across Europe, and has evaluated public health interventions aimed at achieving cervical cancer elimination.
Dr Gountas has served as a member of high-level international scientific groups, including the Viral Hepatitis Strategic Information and Modelling Reference Group of the World Health Organization, and has contributed to policy recommendations that shape public health strategies globally. His work has been published in leading scientific journals, including The Lancet Regional Health – Europe, The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology, International Journal of Drug Policy, Addiction, Vaccines, BMC Public Health, and Public Health Journal.
