Belén Fraile is realizing the transformative power of artificial intelligence (AI), data science, and digital health to drive innovations that improve patient care at Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine.
As Chief R&D Data Science Officer, Belén is shaping a best-in-class data science and AI strategy to break down silos, foster collaboration, and drive insights to speed up the discovery and development of life-saving therapies and solutions. Her vision sees beyond any individual digital breakthrough to reimagine how the entire healthcare system works, embracing technologies and data-driven approaches to spark innovation and deliver truly patient-centric care and AI-enabled scientists. She serves on both the Innovative Medicines R&D Senior Leadership Team and J&J Data Science Council.
With a career spanning clinical, pharmaceutical, and medical technology sectors, Belén has a passion for technology for the benefit of humanity. She was an early visionary, advocate, and innovator in the adoption of AI to help global healthcare organisations harness their vast datasets and empower scientists to work in more creative, flexible, efficient, collaborative and agile ways, accelerating innovation and improving care delivery. Her unwavering commitment to responsible AI underpins her leadership approach.
Previously, Belén held executive positions at Philips, Moderna, and Novartis, where she was responsible for building new data science and AI capabilities from the ground up, collaborating with leaders across IT, R&D, Commercial, and other functions. She also brings unique insights into the needs of both clinicians and patients to inform data science and digital health strategies from her roles in the clinical setting. These include leadership of Population Health and Enterprise Analytics at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, where she spearheaded advancements in value-based care, digital health integration, and patient-centric interventions, and her early career as an OB/GYN in Madrid, Spain, which fueled her passion and commitment to be a champion for women’s health.
Belén holds an MBA from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an MS in Healthcare Policy and Management from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and an MD from Madrid’s Complutense University School of Medicine. She is a guest lecturer at Harvard University.
