Rozemarijn Vliegenthart is Professor of Cardiothoracic Imaging at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), the Netherlands. She is an internationally recognised radiologist whose work focuses on the use of low-dose CT imaging for the early detection of lung cancer and cardiovascular disease.
She has been involved in the NELSON lung cancer screening trial since its inception and led the NELSON-POP project, which combines imaging, genetic, and environmental data to improve risk stratification and lung nodule management. Her research has contributed to the evidence underpinning the implementation of lung cancer screening programs across Europe and to the development of screening recommendations and policy initiatives.
A distinctive aspect of her work is the integration of coronary artery calcium scoring and other imaging biomarkers into lung cancer screening programs to enhance cardiovascular risk assessment and maximise the population health benefits of low-dose CT screening. She has also led several large-scale research initiatives, including ImaLife, CONCRETE, and B3Care, focused on early detection and prevention of major chronic diseases.
Professor Vliegenthart has a strong interest in artificial intelligence and data-driven imaging, with research aimed at improving screening efficiency, risk prediction, and personalised prevention. She serves on the IASLC-Lancet Commission on Lung Cancer and the Steering Committee of the European Lung Cancer Screening Association, and is Past President of the European Society of Cardiovascular Radiology. Her work bridges research, clinical practice, and policy to support equitable and effective cancer screening across Europe.
