Prof. Luigi Ricciardiello has a broad background in gastroenterology and digestive endoscopy, with specific training and expertise in the genetics and management of hereditary colorectal cancer syndromes and sporadic colorectal cancer. His research is particularly focused on the prevention of colorectal cancer, exploring the benefit of chemoprevention. As PI or co-investigator of several Italian Foundation for Cancer Research-funded grants (AIRC), he has extensively worked on the chemopreventive potential of multiple compounds in hereditary colorectal cancer syndromes.

Ricciardiello is the PI of an international clinical trial focusing on the chemoprevention of Familial Adenomatous polyposis using the omega 3 PUFA eicosapentaenoic acid. He has also been cocoordinator of the EU-funded project Pathway-27 which explored preventive strategies against Metabolic syndrome and its related diseases. Since 2011, he has been coordinating the colon cancer screening program at the University Hospital in Bologna and since 2018 he has been in charge of the whole colon cancer pathway at the same institution. This has allowed Ricciardiello to conduct studies on the role of risk factors in the large colon cancer screening population that we are following in our region.
