Maria Brotons Agullo

Maria Brotons is a Medical Doctor with the Medical Specialty in Preventive Medicine and Public Health.

She is an epidemiologist in the Unit of Infection and Cancer – Information and Interventions within the Cancer Epidemiology Research Program (PREC) in the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO).

Her research topics focus on the epidemiology and prevention of human papillomavirus (HPV) infections and related diseases, mainly through HPV vaccination.

She leads the studies to evaluate the impact of the HPV vaccine introduction in Catalonia, in collaboration with the Catalan Health Department, which have led to a current collaborating with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) to develop a guideline to assess the impact of HPV vaccination in Latin America.

She is also involved in the HPV Information Center, a web-based resource led by ICO and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) that aims to compile and centralize worldwide updated data and statistics on HPV and related diseases. As part of the HPV-Information Centre she has participated in several international projects, as well as a consultancy requested by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) to update the HPV vaccination guidelines in the European Union.

Within the e-oncologia online learning platform, she has coordinated the development of a course on HPV vaccination.
